Justice Y.V. Chandrachud

Former Chief Justice of India

1. In the Service of Justice

Justice Yeshwant Vishnu Chandrachud, a proud alumnus of Nutan Marathi Vidyalaya, stands tall among India’s most revered legal luminaries. Born on 12 July 1920 in Pune, British India (now Maharashtra), he hailed from a prominent Marathi family rooted in Kanhersar village, Khed Taluka, Pune District.

He received his early education at Nutan Marathi Vidyalaya, followed by studies at Elphinstone College and the ILS Law College, Pune. He later became one of the earliest graduates to receive an LL.M. degree from Bombay University, showcasing his academic brilliance from a young age.

Justice Chandrachud was appointed as a Justice of the Supreme Court of India on 28 August 1972. He went on to serve as the 16th Chief Justice of India, holding office for an unprecedented 7 years and 4 months — the longest tenure in the country’s history.

Known for his deep understanding of constitutional law and unwavering commitment to justice, his judicial legacy continues to shape the legal discourse in India. His journey from the classrooms of Nu. Ma. Vi. to the highest echelons of the Indian judiciary is a source of immense pride for the school and inspiration for generations to come.

Renowned Actor and Psychiatrist

2. A Pioneer in Art and Mental Health

Dr. Mohan Agashe, an illustrious alumnus of Nutan Marathi Vidyalaya, has made landmark contributions in both psychiatry and the performing arts. Born in Bhor, Maharashtra, he studied medicine at B.J. Medical College, Pune, and earned an MD in Psychiatry.

He served as Director at the Maharashtra Institute of Mental Health and held senior positions at the FTII and NFDC. A recipient of the Padma Shri, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, and the Goethe Medal, Dr. Agashe has used art as a medium for public education and mental health awareness, making him a rare blend of science and creativity.

Ashwin Chitale

National Award-Winning Actor

3. Excellence at a Young Age

A proud alumnus of Nutan Marathi Vidyalaya, Ashwin Chitale is best known for his role in the national award-winning Marathi film Shwaas, which earned him the National Film Award for Best Child Artist in 2004.

Beyond cinema, Ashwin has pursued academic excellence in Philosophy and Indology, earning a Master’s degree. He is the founder of Aashwin Heritage, a platform promoting Indian culture, heritage, and storytelling. As a poet and speaker, he continues to inspire audiences with his deep love for Marathi and Indian traditions.

4. A Storyteller Who Inspires

An inspiring alumnus of Nutan Marathi Vidyalaya, Subodh Bhave is a household name in Marathi cinema and theatre. Known for his powerful portrayals of historical figures like Lokmanya Tilak (Lokmanya: Ek Yugpurush) and Balgandharva, he is also the director of the critically acclaimed musical film Katyar Kaljat Ghusali.

Subodh’s career is rooted in a deep respect for culture and heritage. A former IT professional turned artist, he is widely appreciated for bringing classical stories and values to the mainstream through compelling performances.

These alumni are just a few shining examples of the legacy of Nu. Ma. Vi. We are proud of every student who walks through our halls and goes on to make a difference in the world.
